Introduction:
This unit is concerned with teaching us about what makes a great person. But it should be remembered that everything that is said in this unit applies to women as well as men. After studying this unit, it is hoped that we will be able to see the differences between a famous person and a great one. A great person is one who has devoted his or her life or sacrificed(犧牲) to fight for freedom or the rights of other human beings, has helped others selflessly(無私地), and made other people’s dreams of a better life come true, etc. So it is not enough to be a famous person or a national leader. A famous person may be well-known but if he/ she has not gone through struggles and difficulties for their noble cause(崇高事業(yè)), they can not be called a great person.
Nelson andela was chosen as the example of a modern great man because of his fight for fairness(公正) in South Africa and his far-sighted and generous ideas to those white people who are against him. His idea on how to resolve(解決) conflicts can be found in the teachings of Gandhi, which he put into practice. After many years’ hard struggle, he helped his people get the same rights as white people in his country.

(Background information) Nelson andela, born 18 July 1918, is a South African politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, the first ever to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. Before being elected President, andela was the leader and co-founder of g of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962 he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. andela went on to serve 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island. Following his release from prison on 11 February 1990, andela led his party in the negotiations that led to the establishment of democracy in 1994. As President, he frequently gave priority to reconciliation(調停;和解,調和), while introducing policies aimed at combating poverty and inequality(不平等) in South Africa.
