In recent years, the Earth has been getting warmer. Average temperatures have risen. Possibly this is natural, but probably we are causing it.Modern people use a lot of electricity and drive a lot of cars. This puts carbon dioxide into the air and helps to make the planet warmer. When we hear this news, we may smile. No one likes long, cold winters, but, unluckily, there are many bad points about a warmer Earth.
First, the ice at the Poles melts and becomes water. The result is that the sea level becomes higher. Low islands will disappear. Cities on the coast will be in danger from the sea. Will Tokyo, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Shanghai become like parts of Holland ? lower than the sea? Possibly we will have to build walls to keep the water out. Typhoons will become even more dangerous and frightening.
Sadly, the second point is that storms will become bigger. Super-typhoons will be born in the Pacific and do great damage to East Asia. The same will happen to the Eastern United States.
As the weather changes, some places that now have rain will become dry. The farmers will not be able to grow plants. Maybe some dry places will become wet ? we don’t know, but we will soon find out, and the change will cause many problems. There might be wars because of it.
(  )38.What will happen to low islands when the Earth gets warmer and warmer?
     A. They will melt and become water.   B. They will be under the water.
     C. They will become higher.     D. They will keep out the water.
(  )39. In the last sentence, “it” refers to ________.
     A. the change of weather           B. the power of the United States
     C. the ice at the Poles         D. the average temperature
(  )40. Which of the following sentences is false?
     A. Shanghai will possibly build walls to prevent the water, like parts of Holland.
     B. The farmers will not be able to grow plants because of the dry weather.
     C. Electricity puts carbon dioxide into the air.
     D. The warmer the Earth is getting, the higher the average temperature is.
(  )41. Which is the best title of this passage?
     A. The Earth Is Getting Warmer     B. Global Warming Problems
     C. We Made the Earth Warmer     D. How to Protect the Earth
                                    D
Have you ever had the strange feeling that you were being watched? You turned around and, sure enough, someone was looking right at you!
Parapsychologists (靈學(xué)家) say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them. To research whether such a “sixth sense” really exists, Robert Baker, a psychologist (心理學(xué)家) at the University of Kentucky, did two experiments.
In the first one, Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and stared at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects(受試者)were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV, or working at a computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods. Later, when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no sense that someone was staring at them.
For the second experiment, Baker told the subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind in a laboratory setting. The people had to write down when they felt they were being stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found that the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at and when they weren’t.
Baker concludes that people do not have the ability to sense when they’re being stared at. If people doubt the outcome of his two experiments, said Baker, “I suggest they repeat the experiments and see for themselves.”
(  )42. The aim of the two experiments is to ________.
A. explain when people can have a sixth sense
B. show how people act while being watched in the lab
C. study whether humans can sense when they are stared at
D. prove why humans have a sixth sense
(  )43. The underlined word “outcome” in the last paragraph most probably means ________.
A. value          B. result          C. performance        D. connection
(  )44. In the second experiment, the subjects _________.
         A. could tell when they were stared at and when they weren’t.
         B. could tell when they were stared at but couldn’t tell when they weren’t.
         C. couldn’t tell when they were stared at but could tell when they weren’t.
D. couldn’t tell when they were stared at or when they weren’t.
(  )45. What can be learned from the passage?
A. People are born with a sixth sense.
B. The experiments support parapsychologists’ idea.
C. The subjects do not have a sixth sense in the experiments.
D. People have a sixth sense in all places.

  請(qǐng)認(rèn)真閱讀下面短文,并根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問(wèn)題。
It is easy for many people to catch a cold in the springtime or fall. It makes us wonder if scientists can send a man to the moon, why can’t they find a cure for the common cold? The answer is easy. There are actually different cold viruses out there. You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a cure for each one.
When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood rushes to your nose and causes a block in it. You feel terrible because you can’t breathe well, but your body is actually eating the virus. Your temperature goes up and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting into your cells(細(xì)胞). You may feel very uncomfortable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold.
Different people do different things to deal with colds. In the United States and some other countries, for example, people might have chicken soup to help them get over the cold. Some people take hot baths and drink warm liquids. Other people take medicine to stop different symptoms(癥狀)of colds.
There is one interesting thing to note—some scientists say taking medicine when you have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn’t have a way to fight it and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this:
It takes about one week to get over a cold if you don’t take medicine, but it takes only seven days to get over a cold if you take medicine.
76. When is it easy for many people to catch a cold?

77. Why do you have difficulty breathing when you catch a cold?

A Good Habit, a Successful School Life
A habit is something that you do often or regularly almost without thinking, especially something that is hard to stop doing.
In our school life, we should prepare well for each lesson. In class, we must listen to the teacher carefully. Besides, it’s important for us to do our homework on our own.
In our daily life, we ought to keep a healthy diet. Also, it’s necessary for us to exercise a lot And we should learn to make good use of our time.
In a word, good habits can help us learn things better and improve our skills. We can learn to control ourselves if we have good habits.
I think good habits are really good for our mind and body.
