◆allow v.

1. 表示“允許”，通常為及物動詞，其后可接名詞、代詞、動名詞作賓語，但不能接不定式。如：

我們不許在池子里游泳。

正：We don’t allow swimming in the pool.

誤：We don’t allow to swim in the pool.

注：allow 后雖然不能直接跟不定式作賓語，但可跟不定式的復(fù)合結(jié)構(gòu)作賓語。如：

We don’t allow [permit] children to swim in the pool. 我們不許孩子們在池子里游泳。

2. 有時可接雙賓語。如：

He didn’t allow her any freedom. 他不允許她有任何自由。

3. 有時用作不及物動詞，其后通常接介詞 of 或 for。如：

(1) allow of 容許。如：

The facts allow of only one explanation. 這些事實只能有一種解釋。

(2) allow for 估計到，體諒。如：

We must allow for his youth. 我們必須要體諒他年輕。

Allowing for the train being late, we should be back by10. 30. 考慮到火車會晚點，我們最遲應(yīng)該在10. 30前回來。
