◆doubt v. & n.
1. 用作動(dòng)詞，在肯定句中，其后通常接 whether, if 引導(dǎo)的賓語從句，在否定句或疑問句中通常接 that 從句。如：
I doubt if [whether] he’ll come. 我拿不準(zhǔn)他是否會(huì)來。
I don’t doubt that he will succeed. 我敢肯定他會(huì)成功。
Do you doubt that he will win? 你不相信他會(huì)贏嗎?
注：在現(xiàn)代英語中，在肯定句中也可接 that 從句。如以下兩例摘自朗文詞典：
I doubt that [if, whether] he’s coming. 我懷疑他是否會(huì)來。
I doubt that we’ll ever see George again. 我懷疑我們是否還會(huì)見到喬治。
2. 用作名詞，與用作動(dòng)詞類似，在肯定句中后接 whether從句，在否定句中或疑問句后接 that-從句。如：
I have no doubt that it is true. 我敢肯定這是真的。
There is some doubt whether he will come to help us. 他是否會(huì)來幫助我們還有些疑慮。
◆down & up adv. & prep.
這是一組反義詞，因其用法相似，故放在一起講述：
1. 用作副詞，down 的基本義為“向下”或“在下面”；up 的基本義為“向上”或“在上面”。如：
He jumped up and caught the ball. 他跳起來接住了球。
He looked the girl up and down. 他上下打量著這個(gè)姑娘。
He sat down but she stood up. 他坐下，但她卻站了起來。
A：It’s hot up here. 這上面很熱。
B：Really? But it’s cool down here. 真的嗎? 但這下面卻很涼快。
A:Is he up yet? 他起床了嗎?
B:Yes, he’s up but not down. 起床了，但還沒有下樓來。
2. 表示北到南、從中央到地方、從內(nèi)地到沿海、從城市到鄉(xiāng)村、從學(xué)校到社會(huì)等，用 down；而表示從南到北、從地方到中央、 從沿海到內(nèi)地、從鄉(xiāng)村到城市、從中學(xué)到大學(xué)等，用 up。如：
He lives down south. 他住在南方。
He’s just come down from the university. 他剛大學(xué)畢業(yè)。
They have gone up to the city. 他們上城里去了。
He is up from the country. 他是從鄉(xiāng)下來的。
When is he going up to Oxford (Beijing)? 他什么時(shí)候去牛津(北京)?
3. 表示由大到小、由多到少、由高到低、由濃變淡、由強(qiáng)到弱、由動(dòng)到靜、由近而遠(yuǎn)等，用 down；而表示由小到大、由少到多、 由低到高、由弱到強(qiáng)、由遠(yuǎn)而近等。如：
The wind died down [away]. 風(fēng)平靜下來了。
Speak up, Jack. 杰克，說得大聲些。
A：Are prices coming down? 物價(jià)在下跌嗎?
B：No, they are still going up. 不，還在上漲。
I asked him to turn the radio down, but he turned it up. 我叫他把收音機(jī)的音量關(guān)小，但他卻把它開大了。
4. 用于句首，其后引出倒裝句。如：
Down came the hammer. 錘子突然掉了下來。
Up went the arrow into the sky. 颼地一聲，箭飛上了天。
注：若主語是代詞，則不倒裝。如：
Down it came. 它一下子掉了下來。
Up you come. 你上來。
5. 兩者都可用作介詞(其后接有名詞作賓語)：
(1) 表示靜態(tài)意義，down 指“在……下面”、“在……的末端”； up 指“在……上面”。如：
The bathroom is down the stairs. 洗澡間在樓梯下面。
They live just down the road. 他們就住在馬路那頭。
They live up the hill. 他們住在山上。
His office is up the stairs. 他的辦公室在樓上。
(2) 表示動(dòng)態(tài)意義，down 指“沿著……往下(或往遠(yuǎn)處)”；up表示“沿著……往上(或往近處)”。如：
Tears ran down her face. 眼淚順著她的臉流了下來。
The boy climbed up (down) the tree. 這男孩爬上(下)樹。
I carried the bag up (down) the stairs. 我把袋子扛上(下)了樓梯。
比較以下正誤句型:
他下了梯子。
正：He got down the ladder.
誤：He got down the horse. (一個(gè)人不可能“沿馬而下”)
比較：He got down from the horse. 他從馬上跳下來。
他爬上了屋頂
正：He climbed up on the roof.
正：He climbed up to the roof.
誤：He climbed up the roof. (此句的意思是:沿著屋頂往上爬，不合邏輯)
比較：He climbed up the hill. 他爬上山(即沿著山往上爬)。
