Scientists are trying to make the deserts into good land again. They want to bring water to the deserts, so people can live and grow food. They are learning a lot about the deserts. But more and more of the earth is becoming desert all the time. Scientists may not be able to change the desert in time.
Why is more and more land becoming desert?Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth.
Some places on the earth don’t get much rain. But they still don’t become deserts. This is because some green plants are growing there. Small green plants and grass are very important to dry places. Plants don’t let the sun make the earth even drier. Plants do not let the wind blow the dirt away. When a bit of rain falls, the plants hold the water. Without plants, the land can become desert more easily.

There are two rare species of crocodile in Australia — the saltwater crocodiles and the freshwater ones.
Saltwater crocodiles are among the world’s largest crocodiles, with males often reaching five meters. But some can reach six to eight meters. Females grow up to 2.5 meters long.
Saltwater crocodiles live in rivers, and coastal waters in northern Australia and eat a wide variety of prey (獵物). The young ones stick to insects, small reptiles and fish. But adults hunt for bigger prey like snakes, monkeys and cattle. And they have been known to attack humans.
Freshwater crocodiles, however, aren’t usually dangerous to people. They live in freshwater streams, rivers and large water holes in northern Australia. Freshwater crocodiles aren’t as big as saltwater ones either, reaching a length of three metres at most.
Crocodiles first appeared 200 million years ago and lived originally on land. But they soon evolved into aquatic (水生的) animals.
These reptiles are excellent predators (肉食動物) and have few natural enemies. Crocodiles have about 30 or 40 teeth in each jaw. And it is the jaw that gives a unique feature to them.
A crocodile can close its jaws with such force that it can break the bones of some animals. Yet, once the jaws are shut, they’re so weak that they can be held together by a person’s hand.
To reproduce, crocodiles, like other reptiles, lay eggs. One female can produce between 20 and 90 eggs at a time. Once laid, female crocodiles bury their eggs in sand or mud, where they are left to hatch. Some females stay in the area to protect the nest and look after the young after they hatch, but often other predators eat the eggs.
59. The largest crocodiles in Australia can reach a length of ______.

60. What do saltwater crocodiles and freshwater crocodiles have in common?

C. The male crocodiles will protect the eggs.
D. The female crocodiles will leave the nest.

Rock and roll music developed in the United States in the early nineteen-fifties. It was based on the music called rhythm and blues that was performed by African American musicians.
Early rock and roll singers developed their own kinds of music. Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan were the most popular rock and roll musicians in the early 1960’s. All were American. Then, in 1964, a new rock and roll group from England invaded America: the Beatles.
Some people say the Beatles’ music shook America like an earthquake. The Beatles changed rock and roll forever. Their early songs were influenced by American rock and roll musicians, including Chuck Berry. But the Beatles looked different and sounded different from any musical group before them.
The Beatles released their first album in the United States in 1964, when all of the top five records in America were by the Beatles. In 1967, they released an album called “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” It was one of the first “concept” albums. That is, all the songs were linked by a common story or idea.
The popularity of the Beatles led the way for more rock and roll bands from England to become popular in America. The Rolling Stones was the most important of these bands. The Rolling Stones is one of the few groups from the 1960’s that is still performing and recording today. In 1965, the group recorded one of its most famous songs, “Satisfaction”.
The musical instrument most linked to rock and roll is the guitar. Experts say Jimi Hendrix was one of the most influential guitar players in rock and roll during the late 1960’s. His “Purple Haze” was liked by many people.
By the 1970’s, rock and roll music became known as rock music. It expanded into many new forms. For example, there was country rock, hard rock, acid rock, and heavy metal rock. Punk rock, jazz rock, and glitter rock.
In the middle 1970’s, experts say rock music regained some of the energy of early rock and roll. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band became popular with their album “Born to Run”. Springsteen’s music was like the lively rock and roll music of the early nineteen-sixties. Many of his songs were about social issues. He sang about the effects of unemployment and the war in Vietnam.
63. The main topic of this passage is _______.
A. the history of American music
B. the development of rock and roll music
C. the famous rock and roll groups
D. the new forms of rock and roll music
64. Which of the following matches is NOT true?
A. the Beatles — Chuck Berry
B. the Rolling Stones — Satisfaction
C. Jimi Hendrix — Purple Haze
D. Bruce Springsteen — Born to Run
65. Whose songs were mainly about social problems like unemployment and war?
A. Elvis Presley’s. B. Bob Dylan’s.
C. Jimi Hendrix’s. D. Springsteen’s.
66. From the passage, we can know that _______.
A. one of the Rolling Stones’ albums was called “concept”
B. the Beatles and the Rolling Stones became popular at the same time
C. rock and roll music had many different forms at the beginning
D. rock and roll music probably came from African American music

The first ancient Olympic Games for which we still have written records were held in 776 BC. Coroebus won the only event at the Olympics. This made him the very first Olympic champion in history. Then they grew and continued to be played every four years. In 393 AD, the Roman emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, announced to end the Games because of their pagan (異教的) influences. About 1,500 years later, a young Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin began their revival (恢復(fù)). In 1892 Coubertin first brought forward his idea to revive the Olympic Games but failed.
Two years later, Coubertin organized a meeting with 79 delegates (代表) who represented nine countries. At this meeting he got what he wanted. All the delegates at the con-ference voted for the Olympic Games. They also decided to have Coubertin set up an international committee to organize the Games. This committee became the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Demetrious Vikelas from Greece was selected to be its first president. Athens was chosen for the revival of the Olympic Games and the planning was begun.
The very first modern Olympic Games opened in the first week of April, 1896. Since the Greek government had been unable to afford a stadium, a rich Greek architect, Georgios Averoff, donated one million drachmas (over $100,000) to repair the Panathenaic Stadium, originally built in 330 BC.
Since the Games were not well publicized internation-ally, contestants (選手) were not nationally chosen but rather came individually and at their own expense. Some contestants were tourists who happened to be in the area during the Games.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I’ve learned from a newspaper that six of eight bear species in the world are dying out. Scientists say that humans are their biggest threat because some parts of bears are very expensive as medicine. That’s one of the reasons why bears are often killed. In addition, many habitats of bears are being destroyed as a result of human activities, so bears are losing their homes.
To save bears, I think more reserves for bears should be set up so that they can live freely there. Laws should be passed to prevent people from killing bears.
Please give a hand to the endangered bears. They need help to survive.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
