《第二十二條軍規(guī)》是美國(guó)作家 Joseph Heller 的一部諷喻小說(shuō)。首次出版于1961年。本文是部分書摘。
Force is wrong, and two wrongs never make a right.
借助暴力是錯(cuò)誤的，而兩個(gè)錯(cuò)誤并不會(huì)負(fù)負(fù)得正疊加出一個(gè)正確。
To die or not to die, that was the question.... History did not demand Yossarian's premature demise, justice could be satisfied without it, progress did not hinge upon it, victory did not depend on it. That men would die was a matter of necessity; which men would die, though, was a matter of circumstance, and Yossarian was willing to be the victim of anything but circumstance.
去死還是不去死，這就是問(wèn)題 ... 歷史并沒(méi)有要求 Yossarian 早夭，Yossarian 的生死無(wú)關(guān)公正性、不影響戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)進(jìn)展、也不決定勝敗。人會(huì)死是自然規(guī)律；但具體到哪個(gè)人會(huì)死則由一些其它情形而定，而 Yossarian 最不想成為的就是為形勢(shì)所迫的受害者。
Yossarian understood that they were different people together in daylight than they were alone in the dark.
Yossarian 明白，他們白天在一起時(shí)和晚上獨(dú)自一人時(shí)是不同的。
The country was in peril; he was jeopardizing his traditional rights of freedom and independence by daring to exercise them.
國(guó)家處于危險(xiǎn)中；他正危及到他傳統(tǒng)的自由和獨(dú)立的權(quán)利，而危及它們的正是因?yàn)樗尤荒懜覍?shí)踐這些權(quán)利。
Every victim was a culprit, every culprit a victim, and somebody had to stand up sometime to try to break the lousy of inherited habit that was imperiling them all.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

What did matter was that everyone thought it existed, and that was much worse, for there was no object or text to ridicule or refute, to accuse, criticize, attack, amend, hate, revile, spit at, rip to shreds, trample upon or burn up.

"He didn't influence me. You know what I might do? I might stay right here in this hospital bed and vegetate. I could vegetate very comfortably right here and let other people make the decisions."
“他沒(méi)有影響我。你知道我會(huì)怎么做嗎？我就待在這個(gè)醫(yī)院里，像棵植物。我可以在這兒很舒服地做一棵植物，讓別人做決定。”
"You must make decisions," Major Danby disagreed. "A person can't live like a vegetable."
“你必須要做決定，” 少校 Danby 不同意�！耙粋�(gè)人不能活得像棵植物�！�
"Why not?"
“為什么不能？”
A distant warm look entered Major Danby's eyes. "It must be nice to live like a vegetable," he conceded wistfully.
一縷遙遠(yuǎn)的暖意進(jìn)入了少校 Danby 的目光�！澳芟褚豢弥参镆粯�生活一定很愜意，” 他神往地表示同意。
"It's lousy," answered Yossarian.
“那糟透了，” Yossarian 回答。
"No, it must be very pleasant to be free from all this doubt and pressure," insisted Major Danby. "I think I'd like to live like a vegetable and make no important decisions. "
“才不，能遠(yuǎn)離所有這些疑問(wèn)和壓力一定妙極了，” 少校 Danby 堅(jiān)持道�！拔蚁胛覍幵赶窨弥参镆粯踊钪挥米鲋匾獩Q定。”
"What kind of a vegetable, Danby?"
“哪一種植物呢，Danby？”
"A cucumber or a carrot."
“一根黃瓜或胡蘿卜�！�
"What kind of cucumber? A good one or a bad one?"
“什么樣的黃瓜？好的還是壞的？”
"Oh, a good one, of course."
“哦，好的，當(dāng)然了�！�
"They'd cut you off in your prime and slice you up for a salad."
“他們會(huì)在你最好的時(shí)候把你砍下來(lái)，切片做沙拉。”
Major Danby's face fell. "A poor one, then."
少校 Danby 的臉色黯淡了。“那就做壞的。”
"They'd let you rot and use you for fertilizer to help the good ones grow."
“他們會(huì)讓你爛掉，然后給其它好黃瓜做肥料。”
"I think I don't want to live like a vegetable, then," said Major Danby with a smile of resignation.
“那我想我不愿意像植物一樣活著了，” 少校 Danby 帶著投降的微笑說(shuō)。
