What is language for? Some people seem to think it’s for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words―the longer the lists, the better. That’s wrong.Language is for the exchange of ideas and information. It’s meaningless knowing all about a language if you can’t use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can’t speak correctly or fluently(流利地).
They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language.Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too.Bernard Shaw once wrote, “Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule,it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, they make language. But a people can only make its own language. It can’t make another people’s language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn’t overdo it. They should put communication first.

Noah Webster was a teacher when he was very young. At that time, it was the colony (殖民地)of Britain and they wanted to fight for independence from it. The books that American children used in school all came from Britain. The books were all about British people and British places. Webster wanted books that would mean more to American children. So he wrote three books that used American examples ---a grammar book, a spelling book, and a reader. These books were very popular, and millions of them were sold. Webster was interested in changing the spellings of words. He wanted words to be spelled the way they were pronounced. For example, he thought the words “head” should be spelled “hed”, and the word “l(fā)augh” should be spelled “l(fā)af”. People liked Webster’s suggestions. However ,few words were actually changed . One group of words that were changed was words in which an unpronounced “ u ” followed an “o”. That was why Americans wrote “colour ” and “l(fā)abour”. With the money he made from his books, Webster was able to write. It was the first American English dictionary, which was published in 1828. Webster’s dictionary had over 70,000 words and gave the meaning and origin (起源) of each. To this day, Webster’s work is the example that most dictionaries of American English follow. 59. Which of the following statement is TRUE? A. Noah Webster had to borrow books from Britain when he was a student. B. Noah Webster had his own government when he was very young. C. As a teacher, Noah Webster wasn’t satisfied with the books he used.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從下列的選項A---F中選出能慨括每一段主題的最佳選項。 選項中有一項為多余項。
A. Gift giving proven to be valuable
B. Memories from gift giving
C. Moments and events for gift giving
D. Various functions of gift giving
E. Gift giving as a wasteful practice
F. Gift giving as a two-way social activity

Gift Giving
71. ___________________
There are many occasions(場合) for giving gifts in modern industrialized societies: birthdays,
naming ceremonies, weddings, anniversaries, New Year. It is common to give gifts on many of these celebrations in western cultures. In addition, special events, such as one’s first day of school or graduation from university, often require gift giving.
72. _____________________
What is happening when we give gifts? Most important, we are exchanging gifts. If someone
gives me a gift for my birthday, I know that I am usually expected to give one on his or her next birthday. A gift builds up or confirms a social obligation(義務(wù)).
73. _____________________
Gifts tighten personal relationships and provide a means of communication between loved ones. People say that a gift lets the recipient(接受者) know we are thinking of them, and that we want to make the person “feel special”. We want people to feel wanted, to feel part of our social or family group. We give presents to say “I’m sorry.” Sometimes it is difficult for us to find a present that someone will like. Sometimes we give things that we like or would feel comfortable with. In all these cases, the gifts are sending out messages-----often very expressive ones.
74. ____________________
People tend to talk about presents in a fairly loving way. A woman whose mother had died years ago described the many gifts around her house. These were gifts that her mother had given her over the years: “I appreciate these, and they mean something to me,” the woman said, “because I remember the occasions they were given on, and that they were from my mother, and the relationship we’ve had.” The gifts remain and keep the relationship alive in mind. This woman felt the same way about the gifts she gave to others. She hoped that the recipients would look at her gifts in years to come and remember her.
75. _________________
Emotions(情感) like these suggest that a positive spirit still lies behind gift giving. They prove that the anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss was wrong to say that modern western gift giving is highly wasteful. Studies in Canada and elsewhere have also shown that this is not the case. Each gift is unique even if so many are given. The emotional benefit for those who exchange gifts is the very reason for the tradition to continue.

September 5th Saturday Fine
Today we went on an organized trip to Ultima Thule. We set out in the school bus at 7:20 am. The weather was pleasant and all of us were excited. After two hours’ ride, we arrived there at 9:30. We began our program as soon as we got off the bus. We played games on the sands and swam in the water happily. Then we had lunch in a restaurant. In the afternoon we held a contest of telling stories in English. The winners were given beautiful prizes. Many photos are taken there. We enjoyed ourselves very much. At half past five we returned safely.
What an unforgettable trip!
