As the economy begins to recover, salary increases should do the same.
In the past few years, employers have raised workers’ salaries by about 4 percent per year-except for 2009, when the figure dropped to 2.1 percent, according to a survey of world at Work. About one-third of companies froze raises altogether.
For 2010, world at Work’s survey projects an average salary increase budget of 2.7 percent, a figure that shows the situation has improved but the job market is still weak. Between 10 percent and 15 percent of companies said they would freeze raises-far fewer than in 2009, but still more than in most years.
How can you get a rise? Avalos and others offer the following tips:
*Do your job well. This means producing high-quality work, of course, but also keeping the big picture in mind..
“It really comes down to positioning yourself as a high performer, somebody who is aware of business goals and helps the company meet their goals as an organization,” Avalos said.
*Be visible. When times are hard, some workers think, “I’m going to down and hope that nobody notices me, because I don’t want to be on a layoff(解雇) list,” said Richard Phillips, owner of Advantage Career Solutions. This is a mistake, because you’re unlikely to get a rise if no one knows what you have done. “If anything, what you want to do is to be more visible.”
*Make your boss’s life easier. This means everything from having a good attitude to taking on extra tasks. If you don’t know how you can help your boss, ask.
*Ask for a rise. Talk to your boss and present your case: Here’s what I’ve done, here’s how it fits with the company’s goals, here is why I think it’s worth a salary increase. In some cases, even if your company has an official raise freeze, you can get a rise if you make a good case.
If the answer is no-or if you’re not ready to ask directly-Phillips suggests asking, “What would you like to see from me that would put me in line for a rise?”
A question like this can improve your standing. “Just asking the question says to the boss, ‘I’m thinking about where I fit in here, what I can do’,” Phillips said. “That in and of itself has value.”

Is there something that you’ve always wanted to try but just never had the time? Well, make plans to try it now since you are on summer vacation. Not all vacations call for taking a tour bus to take photos of famous landmarks. Some vacations allow you plenty of opportunities to learn.
The most difficult aspect of a learning vacation may be choosing one because the possibilities are endless. If you enjoy cooking, various companies can take you to Italy, France, Spain, Mexico or even Peru. Once there, you can learn to prepare the local cuisine(烹飪). Trips are often planned to fit in with local food festivals or special events.
The term “l(fā)earning vacation” often brings languages to mind. The best way to learn a language is in an environment where it’s spoken. Study Spanish, French or Estonian or Thai. You’ll be able to learn about the country and absorb the culture at the same time.
If you are fond of sports, you can polish your skills or learn new ones. Golf and tennis schools welcome players of all levels. If you want a bigger thrill, you can learn to surf, go climbing or race cars. It’s even possible to learn the art and techniques of bull fighting while on vacation!
You can also discover our inner artist. Many places offer painting classes in different mediums. The scenic locations of the schools offer plenty of subjects that provide inspiration for practice.
If you prefer capturing the world on film, take a photography vacation. Travel with a small group to photograph beautiful animals or scenery. You can also practice your technique on people or at historical sights.
Once you decide on a vacation, choose a company carefully. Request names of recent customers you can contact, and then ask them for an evaluation. The more you know before you go, the better prepared you’ll be. Then go out and learn something!

Nature is full of colors, from rainbows and roses to butterfly wings and peacock tails. Even the fruits and vegetables you eat have different colors: blue blueberries, red strawberries, green broccoli, and orange carrots.
Plants and animals often use colors to attract attention. The substances(物質(zhì)) responsible for these colors belong to a class of chemicals called antioxidants(抗氧化劑). Plants make antioxidants to protect themselves from the sun’s ultraviolet(UV) light.
Ultraviolet light causes chemicals called free radicals(自由基) to form within plant cells. They can destroy parts of the plant. Free radicals also have damaging effects on human beings. Some of these effects like wrinkled skin can be seen. The damage is caused by the free radicals attacking cells in our bodies. Certain cancers and heart disease are linked to free radicals.
Our bodies have natural defences for fighting off free radicals. While we’re young, our defences are pretty strong. However, they get weaker as we get older. The body’s built in defences can only go so far without extra help.
The key to fighting free radicals with fruits and vegetables is to mix and match colors. It’s like sunscreen(防曬霜) for the inside of your body. Go for a range of very bright colors. Colorful foods contain hundreds of healthy chemicals not found anywhere else.
Research into how chemicals in blueberries affect the brain’s function in rats suggests that these chemicals may help our own brains work more efficiently.
Don’t just blame the sun. Ultraviolet light isn’t the only source of free radicals. If you breathe polluted air, such as smog, automobile exhaust(廢氣), or wasted gas from a factory, you take in chemicals that also cause such damage. And, the body itself produces free radicals as it processes food.
63. In which order do the following facts occur?
a. Wrinkled skin can be seen. b. UV light causes free radicals to form.
c. Free radicals damage cells in our bodies.d. The sun gives out UV light.
A. d, b, c, a,B. a, b, c, dC. d, b, a, cD. c, a, d, b
64. We need extra help for fighting off free radicals from fruits and vegetables because ________.
A. our bodies’ built ?in defences can only go away
B. our defences get weaker as we get older
C. we are too young to defend ourselves
D. our bodies’ defences are not natural
65. Which of the following can’t cause free radicals to form?
A. Polluted air.B. The body itselfC. Colorful foods.D. UV light from the sun.

Vans, Keds, Dollies--they sound like the names of rock bands, but if you have teenagers, you’ll know they’re actually the latest in teenage footwear.
But experts are now warning that the current shoe fashions will be causing teenagers discomfort in the short term and storing years of foot, knee and back pain in the future.
Here, the experts identify the problems caused by teenagers’ shoe choices.
KEDS/VANS
SLIP ? on shoes with elastic(彈性的) sides are particularly popular among teenage boys --- with Keds and Vans the most popular brands.
The main problem is that they are just too flat—so flat that the heel, which strikes the ground first, also becomes damaged and painful.
BALLET PUMPS
The worst shoes of all are such light and thin dolly shoes. The problem is partly their flat-pumps, which have no string or heel, have other specific problems.
“As the shoe has no fastening device, it relies on toes to keep the shoe on, causing an awkward gait(步法), this lead to short- and long-term problem such as calluses(繭子), heel and knee pain.”
WEDGES AND STILETTOS
These shoes can also cause problems with gait. They may look good, but the heels on these are so high they can force the wearer’s body weight forward, making them very unstable.
Teens who wear these shoes regularly are also in danger of joining those millions of women with constant back pain.
SCHOOL SHOES
So what do podiatrists(足科醫(yī)生) have on their wish list, especially for everyday wear? Something in a natural, breathable fabric, with a string to hold it on, with a small heel and a deep toe-box that does not press the toes, such as Clark’s Marks & Spencer of Rhino.
If your teen insists on wearing “bad” shoes, get them some simple foot orthotics(矯形器) in the shoes. These support and correct movement of the foot and, properly fitted by a podiatrists, can often transform their walk and halt the damage.
66. Of all the shoes mentioned in the passage, which can cause the worst problem?
A. Marks & SpencerB.Wedges & Stilettos
C. Keds and VansD. Ballet pumps
67.The underlined word “halt” in the last paragraph probably means __________.
A. increaseB. worsenC. cureD. stop
68. From this passage we can infer _________.
A. fashionable shoes all have orthotics in them.
B. trendy shoes may ruin teenagers’ health
C. experts are strongly against wearing poplar shoes
D. podiatrists are expert at producing branded shoes
69.In which column of Mail Online can you find this passage?
A. ScienceB. SportsC. HealthD. Shopping
70. Which pair of shoes may not be found on the podiatrists’ wish list?
A. B. C. D.

People can be addicted to(沉溺于)different things, e.g. alcohol, drug, certain food, or even television. People who have such an addiction are compulsive(強(qiáng)迫的):they have a very powerful psychological need that they feel they must satisfy. According to psychologists, many people are compulsive spenders. They feel that they must spend money. This compulsion, like most others, is impossible to explain reasonably. For compulsive spenders who buy on credit(以賒欠方式),are even more exciting than money. In other words, compulsive spenders feel that with credit, they can do anything. Their pleasure in spending large amounts is actually greater than the pleasure that they get from the things they buy.
There is even a special psychology(心理學(xué)) of bargain bunting. To save money, of course, most people look for sales, low prices, and discounts. Compulsive bargain hunters, however, often buy things that they don’t need just because they are cheap. They want to believe that they are helping their budgets(預(yù)算),but they are really playing an exciting game. When they can buy something for less than other people, they feel that they are winning. Most people, experts claim, have two reasons for their behavior: good reason for things that they do and the real reason.
It is not only scientists, of course, who understand the psychology of spending habits, but also business people. Stores, companies, and advertisers use psychology to increase business. They consider people’s needs for love, power, or influence, their basic values, their beliefs and opinions, and so on in their advertising and sales methods.
Psychologists often use a method called “behavior therapy(療法)” to help individuals solve their personality problems. In the same way, they can help people who feel that they have problems with money.

In recent years, with the rapid development of the economy, there are more and more cars in living quarters. Because of the limited park areas, many public areas even the roads are occupied with cars, which has affected people’s daily life, causing them to feel upset. What’s worse, even traffic accidents have happened sometimes.
In my opinion, developers should build more park areas when building the living quarters. Meanwhile , private cars should be parked in the fixed places with the management of the living quarters. All in all, in order to ease the parking pressure and protect the environment of our living quarters, everyone should be responsible, and we’d better use public traffic means restrict the number of private cars.
