第二節(jié):完形(共20 小題,每小題1 分, 滿分20分)
I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like attention drawn to myself. And 36 otherwise assigned a seat by the teacher, I always 37 to sit at the back of the classroom.
All this 38 after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball team. At first I thought it was a crazy 39 because I didn’t have a good sense of balance, nor did I have the 40 to keep pace with the others on the team and they would tease me. But for the teacher who kept insisting on my “ 41 for it”, I wouldn’t have decided to give it a try.
Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts was only the 42 of it. When I first started 43 the practice sessions, I didn’t even know the rules of the game, much 44 what I was doing. Sometimes I’d get 45 and take a shot at the wrong direction ? which made me feel really stupid. 46 , I wasn’t the only one “new” at the game, so I decided to 47 on learning the game, do my best at each practice session, and not be too hard on myself for the things I didn’t 48 “just yet”.
I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the 49 and the “moves”. Being part of a team was fun and motivating. Very soon the competitive 50 in me was winning over my lack of confidence. With time, I learned how to play and made friends in the 51 ? friends who respected my efforts to work hard and be a team player. I never had so much fun!
With my 52 self-confidence comes more praise from teachers and classmates. I have gone from “ 53 ” in the back of the classroom and not waiting to call attention to myself, 54 raising my hand ? even when I sometimes wasn’t 100 percent 55 I had the right answer. Now I have more self-confidence in myself.

Do you have bright ideas? Ideas or inventions that change society or, at least, make life easier for somebody? Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don’t often make the idea a reality. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encourages young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for schoolchildren under 16; Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16, and there were eleven prize-winners altogether.
Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners, was called “Sunshine Superman”. It’s important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight. Neil’s is more accurate and this is very important for research into the way of using solar power.
You can do so much with animated cartoon. Look at Simon West’s idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn’t a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. “We found that people were more likely to see moving signs,” said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses running or a car falling over the edge of a cliff. Quite a warning!
The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised that British industry doesn’t ask more schoolchildren for suggestions. Perhaps this will be the start of “pupil power!”

A. become good designers for future Britain
B. win as many prizes as they could

A. To add to the beauty of a city.
B. To warn people on the roads of the danger ahead.
C. To help make a car trip more exciting.

60. The writer holds that people seldom .
A. make their life easierB. turn their bright ideas into reality
C. have bright ideasD. think of inventing something

College graduation brings both the satisfaction of academic achievement and the expectation of a well-paid job. But for 6,000 graduates at San Jose State this year, there’s uncertainty as they enter one of the worst job markets in decades. Ryan Stewart has a freshly minted(新興的) degree in religious studies, but no job prospects.
“You look at everybody’s parents and neighbors, and they’re getting laid off and don’t have jobs,” said Stewart. “Then you look at the young people just coming into the workforce... it’s just scary.”
When the class of 2003 entered college, the future never looked brighter. But in the four years they’ve been here, the world outside has changed dramatically.
“Those were the exciting times, lots of dot-com opportunities, exploding offers, students getting top dollar with lots of benefits,” said Cheryl Allmen-Vinnidge of the San Jose State Career Center. “Times have changed. It’s a new market.”
Cheryl Allmen-Vinnidge ought to know. She runs the San Jose State Career Center, sort of a crossroads between college and the real world. Allmen-innidge says students who do find jobs after college have done their homework.
“The typical graduate who does have a job offer started working on it two years ago. They’ve postured(定位)themselves well during the summer. They’ve had several internships(實(shí)習(xí)),” she said. And they’ve majored in one of the few fields that are still hot, like chemical engineering, accounting, or nursing, where average starting salaries have actually increased over last year. Other popular fields (like information systems management, computer science, and political science) have seen big declines in starting salaries.
Ryan Stewart (he had hoped to become a teacher) may just end up going back to school. “I’d like to teach college some day and that requires more schooling, which would be great in a bad economy,” he said.
To some students, a degree may not be a ticket to instant wealth. For now, they can only hope its value will increase over time.

D. They have found full-time jobs as their future career before graduation.
63. The purpose of a college career center is probably to .
A. help students do their homework

A. change his majorB. become a religious leader
C. get a job teachingD. go back to school
65. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. Having a college degree does not provide travel discounts.
B. A college degree doesn’t promise a person a high-paid job.
C. Most students with degrees will be able to find jobs.
D. The best way to get rich is to get a college degree.

Anger is good for you, as long as you control it, according to new psychology research. A new study from Carnegie Mellon University shows anger may help people reduce the negative impacts of stress and help you become healthier.
“Here getting emotional is not bad for you if you look at the case of anger,” said Jennifer Lerner of Carnegie Mellon. “The more people display anger, the lower their stress responses.”
Lerner studied 92 UCLA students by asking them to count back from 6,200. They must say out loud every thirteenth number. Researchers disturbed them by asking them to count faster or ask them other questions. If they made any mistakes, they had to restart from the very beginning. Many students felt depressed about making so many mistakes or got angry.
Lerner used a hidden video camera and recorded all their facial expressions during the test. The researchers describe their reactions as fear, anger and disgust.
Other researchers recorded the students’ blood pressure, pulse and production of a high-stress hormone(荷爾蒙) called cortisol.People whose faces showed more fear during the experiment had higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone. Both can have lasting effects such as diabetes(糖尿病), heart disease, depression and extra weight gain.
When people feel fear, negative impacts increase, but when they get angry, those negatives go down, according to the study.
“Having that sense of anger leads people to actually feel some power in what otherwise is a maddening (令人發(fā)狂的) situation,” Lerner said.
Lerner previously studied Americans’ emotional response to the 9?11 terrorist attacks two months after the incident. She found people who reacted with anger were more optimistic. These people are healthier compared with those who were frightened during the event. So in maddening situations, anger is not a bad thing to have. It’s a healthier response than fear.
66. What is the story mainly about?
A. The findings of new psychology research.
B. What you can do with anger in certain cases.
C. Different effects produced by anger and fear.
D. Healthier responses in maddening situations.
67. Which statement will Jennifer Lerner agree with?
A. It’s better to be angry than to be frightened.
B. Different reactions reflect different outlooks on life.
C. Don’t control your anger and it makes you powerful.
D. Pessimistic people are generally healthier.
68. What does the underlined word “both” refer to according to the passage?
A. Fear and anger.
B. Blood pressure and pulse.
C. Blood pressure and cortisol.
D. Higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone.
69. In what ways can anger be beneficial to people?
A. By showing their optimistic side.B. By reducing their stress.
C. By reducing high blood pressure.D. By taking the place of fear.
70. The researchers irritated(激怒) the students by .
A. recording their performance secretly
B. asking them to count to 6,200 again and again
C. disturbing them and making them start all over again
D. criticizing them when they made mistakes
D
The best way to come first is to go last. An analysis of almost 50 years of competitions?including Eurovision Song Contests and world skating championships?has found that contestants are more likely to win if they are among the last to appear before the judges.
The study by an American university appears to provide scientific proof that the best man, or woman, does not always win.
It found that, on average, the last competitor to appear in the Eurovision Song Contest was more than twice as likely to win as the one who went on first.
The first rounds of figure-skating championships, for which the running order is selected at random, showed more dramatic results. The final skater had a 14 percent chance of victory, making him or her more than four times as likely to win as the first skater.
The study showed a gradual worsening of chances for competitors who appeared earlier in the running order. A contestant who appears first in a contest is two percent less likely to win than one who appears second. A contestant who appears second is two percent less likely to win than one who appears third, and so on.
The findings are published in the March issue of Acta Psychologica, a scientific journal.
Robert Hardman, a senior lecturer in psychology at London Metropolitan University who specializes in the science of decision-making, said that the results were interesting. He suggested that the effect was caused by the limitations of the human memory.
“When people make comparisons, they aren’t really able to make a lot of fine-grade discrimination. When contestants appear at the beginning of a contest, judges have little to compare them to and are perhaps wary(謹(jǐn)慎的) of the scores they give,” he said.
“Later on, when judges are able to compare the contestants to those that have gone before, they might give more extreme marks because they feel more confident about their judgments.”
71. Robert Hardman’s words mainly tell about his .
A. own achievement in the researchB. explanation for the findings
C. suggestion to solve the problemD. comments on the findings
72. The first skater in the first round of figure skating championships had about a percent chance of winning.
A. two B. three C. four D. five
73. According to the study, the best competitor does not always win possibly because
he/she .
A. fails to show his/her very bestB. is mistakenly put in the running order
C. meets with unfair judgesD. appears too early before the judges
74. Judging from the context, the underlined word “worsening” in the 5th paragraph should
mean .
A. decrease in numberB. increase in degree
C. reduction in possibility D. rising in quantity
75. What may be a problem with the judges according to the article?
A. They can’t remember things well enough.
B. They believe the first is seldom the best.
C. They don’t really know what is good.
D. They show favor towards the contestants they like.
